Here are four projects:

1 - A quilt or cushion for someone with Alzheimers/ Parkinson's disease

2 -Turban

3 -Wheelchair bag for MS

4 - A walking frame bag. If you are unable to print the instructions call Margaret on 0412770046

1 - This is a quilt for someone with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. There are lots of bits to poke, pull stroke and fiddle with which have been found to be soothing and calming. Ideas will be appearing regularly in the Countrywoman so start saving bits and pieces like buttons, lace and zips. Fabric should be age appropriate and all attachments fixed securely. Too many upholstery fabrics can make it heavy!

Another version could be a cushion or apron and all should be washable

2 - This is the new easier pattern for turbans but please use the Cancer Council fabric because it is soft and the best. Call Sara 5435 2021 for fabric

3 - Wheelchair bags - note the placement of the velcro straps. Make both straps like the one on the right so the velcro lies the same way.

4 - A walking frame bag - not too deep and outside pockets for easy reach.

Earlier this year squares of fabric were sent out across the sate inviting members to plant some flowers in shades of mauve and aqua. Strips for signatures went too.
It was exciting waiting for the post and seeing the wonderful variety of blocks coming back.
The following pictures show some of the steps in assembling the quilt top. CAN YOU SPOT YOUR BLOCK?

2011 BURSARY WINNER

The presentation of the 2011 Piecemakers bursary was made at The Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE on Wednesday 19th October.

Winner Stephanie Lord from Maleny, 2nd year diploma student

Incoming chairman Sara Faddy, Stephanie Lord and treasurer May Boyd

Before the fashion parade we were shown over the workshops and saw the design rooms and machines. Millinery is also taught and was displayed along with challenge pieces e.g. using a man's shirt. There were some neat uses of collars and pockets!

The fashion parade showed some wonderful ideas and often quirky designs.

The model is wearing Stephanie's designs.

Suitcases containing quilt blocks have started to return to Queensland from every state and the quilt will be assembled before too long. This block of QCWA Piecemakers will be included and seen by many people all over the country, as will the diaries with their stories. This will include a story about us.

Busy Ladies at Emu Park

Nancy Townsend has encouraged the Thursday Craft Ladies at Emu Park to make blocks. These are made into quilt tops for Project Linus which is a 100% volunteer not for profit organization. Their mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children in need.
The quilts are sent to The Royal Children's Hospital, Mater Children's Hospital, Charleville and others.
Quilt tops are sent to Sydney where they have a company donating wadding. A few quilters then complete them.
This is to be an ongoing thing for Emu Park, who sent their first lot off recently and hope to do so every three months or so.

All over the state, quilters have been working hard to help those who lost their homes or are in need. These lovely items have be made to give away.

Margaret Franz is holding her scrappy quilt as you go and an appliqued tea towel. She also showed an all seasons, reversible table runner.

The workshop at Emu Park with Ruth Wagner

Preparing to start at the Kaleidoscope and Hollow boxes workshop. An example is on the wall.

This is a very good example of the hollow boxes using a feature fabric. It shows some open, solid, basic and sliced - to the right and left - cubes.

Everyone loved this slice for afternoon tea

CARAMEL DATE FINGERS

BASE –

1 cup SR flour

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup coconut

125gm butter

Combine flour, brown sugar and coconut, add melted butter and mix well.

Press into greased slice tin and bake at 180 degrees for 10 mins.

TOPPING –

1 can condensed milk

30 gm butter

¾ cup chopped dates

2 tablespoons syrup

¼ cup slivered almonds

Place condensed milk, butter, dates and syrup in saucepan and cook over low

Heat stirring constantly till mixture boils then boil for further 5 minutes.

Pour topping over base and sprinkle with almonds then bake further 10 minutes.

She dyes a lot of her own fabric which means she has a wonderful array of shades to chose from.

Quilts for Love and Care

These are two examples of quilts suitable for the Love and Care project. The first is a panel that has been "bagged" and the other is an I-spy quilt - a good way to use up little pieces.
Quilts are needed for children that have been removed from difficult situations and have nothing of their own.
If the quilt is backed with fleece there is no need for wadding.

Fashionable Bursary Recipient

Sarah Armstrong was awarded a $500 bursary from QCWA. She is from Mt Morgan and is studying textile, clothing and footwear at MSIT in Brisbane. She has put the award towards fees, a pattern making text book and purchasing an industrial sewing machine.
The photo shows her modeling her fabulous creation at the 2nd year fashion night.
We wish her well in her studies and hopefully we will see more of her lovely work in the future.

"Love and Care" project

This project will be adopted in 2011. It is to make a 40" square child's quilt with a pieced front and poly fleece back - no need for wadding. The quilts will be given to a child, as soon as possible when they have been removed from their home by the Department of Child Safety or the Police.

FIRST DAY BACK AT PATCHWORK

She is a tireless worker for CWA and in particular, the Piecemakers Committee. Pam is always available with advice and help for those who need a helping hand.

Moggill Piecemaker have been hard at work, over the Christmas break, and here are some examples of their hard work. Well done girls.

Coolwaters Patchwork Weekend

On the Australia Day weekend the Queensland Piecemakers again hosted the Coolwaters Patchwork Workshop. Ruth bravely undertook the task of tutor to 23 ladies, in 3 entirely different levels of proficiency. Not an easy job, but Ruth in her usual calm, totally organised fashion, managed extremely well.

The workshop was held over two day, with the out-of -towners staying on site at "The Lodge". We had a wonderful weekend of patchwork, mixed with lots of laughter, loads of eating, enjoying making new friends and catching up with old friends.

A recipe for a very good time.

The comradre between us all was fantastic.

Those who were a little more confident than the others, were more than willing to become personal tutors to the not so confident.

We all worked happily together.

Joy managed to produce what seemed like dozens of cakes, slices and other delicacies for us to feast on, for all the morning and afternoon teas, we shared.

Workshop Quilts

The beginners class worked on a nine patch project.

Kath was very proud of her new found talents.

Christine thought she would do a Christmas theme for a change!

This is a completed intermediate project. A great effort for one weekend.

We were lucky enough to have some clever patchworkers amongst us, who shared some of their finished projects.

It was a great pleasure to have been a member of this Workshop Weekend.

We all certainly came away very enthused about Patchwork and the new skills we had mastered.

BURSARY WON BY RHAMAN DONOVAN

This is an extract from Rami's email who was the winner of Piecemakers 2009 Bursary.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. I was very excited to meet you at the "Inside Out Fashion Parade" and very honoured to win the award. The $500.00 has come in very handy and I have been able to get a computer to help me with my studies.
This year is going to be a scary but exciting year. Half way through the year I will graduate from my course and hopefully land myself a job in the fashion industry. My main passions at the moment are children's wear and swimwear.
I would really like to have my own swim wear label called Rurue. Your support has really helped. I am so grateful to everyone from State Piecemakers.

We, as Piecemakers, wish her every success for her future.

Annual Bursary to a Rural Student at MSIT

Every year Piecemakers give a $500.00 cheque to a rural student who is continuing with their studies the following year. This year it was Rhaman Donovan from Flagstone. The Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE held their 'inside out' Fashion Parade + creative industries showcase at Mt Gravatt on 11 Novewmber. The Programme commenced with a Swimwear Parade sponsored by Billabong and we were thrilled to hear that Rhaman also won this award. This entitles her to have her swimwear range in the Billabong 2010 catalogue. The MSIT presented Michael Caton who is now their Patron. He gave a very inspiring speech to the students. After refreshments the Aspiration Fashion Parade began where there were several awards given including our Bursary, a Millinery Award, High Standard of Work Award, Encouragement Award and the grand finale 2009 MSIT Aspiration Award. It was a very interesting and stimulating evening. Congratulation Rhaman and we wish you all the very best for your future in Fashion.

The Five (5) Challenge Quilts, 'Celebrating Queensland - 150 Years'

1. I was unable to photograph a good picture of this quilt so I have broken it into parts and
featured various areas. I hope you enjoy working out just what area you are seeing in each print.

IMAGES OF QLD PAST AND PRESENT.

From the discovery of Artesian Water, the scourge of prickly pear, plague rabbits, back breaking blade shearing, cane and grain harvesting, and the beginnings of the R.F.D.S. and QANTAS, droughts and floods, to modern farming and grazing methods, mining and tourism, we celebrate Queensland - 150 years.

The south east corner, the big city - Brisbane

Farming, mining, bananas, sugar cane and much much more.

Mt Isa this there together with central Queensland mining.

If you look closely you will find Longreach, cotton farming and many more photos of western Queensland.

The far SW corner of Queensland. You will recognise features from the photos.

2. This was a hard wallhanging to photograph and I am sorry I do not have any close ups. It was the CHALLENGE that won first prize and Sara Faddy from Maleny Branch received a $50.oo quilting voucher that was kindly donated by B & B Quilting. Congratulations Sara.

3. This was another wallhanging hard to photograph because of the blue photos and the pale blue background. To explain it is 'Celebrating Queensland - 150 Years of Brisbane Architecture.

Starting with Old Government House in the 1862 in the second panel to the 20th century in the top right hand block to the 21st century in the bottom block with the final photo of the Kurilpa Bridge which was only very recently opened for use. The very first block were chosen highlights such as Night in Queen Street, 1939 and Nightly display over the river 1988, Expo time. With the small photo giving the information of the $13.5 million restoration planned for Old Government House.

4. This beautiful wallhanging of the icons of Queensland was a group effort from some of our newest members of Piecemakers. Congratulations. I am sure you will all enter next year in the Challenge when you each can make a bag in black and white with one other colour.

5. The above is a pendant type wallhanging 'Celebrating Queensland - 150 Years. I have other photos underneath with a close up of some of the delightful fabrics used in this quilt plus the Koala emblem.

The photo above is Janice and Shirley either side of one of the Challenge Quilts made by a joint effort of some of the Moggill girls. The 12 Coffee Mug Bags were made by Janice (in the red top) for sale. These bags below proved to be so very popular and of course all of them sold.

Bags, pin cushions, pot holders, etc displayed here were all for sale.

This beautiful jewellery set was donated by Val for a daily raffle and proved to be very popular. Many thanks for your donation Val.

Our Charity Work on Display

50 Turbans made by Moggill Branch for the Queensland Cancer Council. A few were given away or given for a small donation to visitors to our stall who had friends or family either starting or on Chemo treatment. A further number of 25 were brought from a northern branch and I do apologise as I do not remember the branch. Two branches in Brisbane, Sunnybank/Coopers Plains and Moggill each have a workshop once a year and usually manage to make between 50 and 60 turbans in a day especially if 20 odd have already be cut out.

More Wheelchair Bags

Some of the 150 Wheelchair Bags made by Branches from all over the State are displayed here and will be delivered to the M.S. at Grantham House and 14 to Youngcare, Sinnamon Park. Only a few months ago Moggill delivered several bags to M.S. It is an ongoing charity that Piecemakers has embraced for several years.

Friday, 30th October, last day of Conference

The drawing of the numbers for the Piecemakers Art Union on Friday morning the last day of Conference. Two VIP ladies attending Conference and our Treasurer, Joy (her last official duty as her 6 years as Treasurer is up) finalising the Art Union. Both quilts went to the country area, the winner to Moonie and 2nd to Dalby. Congratulations both winners and we hope you enjoy your new quilts.

On the last morning of the Conference it was time to count the slips for the viewer's choice quilt. Congratulations SARA FADDY of Maleny Branch for winning the Viewer's Choice CHALLENGE

Piecemakers and their Charities

Shirley, our new Committee member and Helen, Moggill's new Convenor presenting Carmen from the Queensland Cancer Council, with 60 turbans all made by the Moggill branch.

Fourteen of the Wheelchair bags plus one quilt were presented to Youngcare by Shirley and Helen. These were promised when we officially presented our Butterfly quilt for hanging at Youngcare. The quilt that was given with the bags was made by Silkwood branch in Northern Queensland.

Our new Piecemakers' committee member, Shirley and Helen, Moggill's Piecemakers' Convenor with 2 of the M.S. ladies. Heather, who is lying down in the Wheelchair, received our first donation of Bags made especially for Wheelchairs at QCWA Conference several years ago. These bags presented here were made by members from all of the State of Queensland.

Tulip Time at Bowral - New South Wales

These are just a couple of many images taken at the Tulip Time Festival at Bowral. The interesting part is that these photos were taken only the second day after N.S.W. had the dreadful dust storm in Sydney and the Southern Highlands The organisers did a wonderful job of keeping them pristine with misting etc. The dust storm was twice as bad down there than it was here in Brisbane.

Moggill Show & Tell - October

This memory wallhanging has been sent to Canada to a family who lost a young member who had the world at her feet. When you look closely you can follow her passions in life and it is a beautiful memory quilt made by Ione.

There were two very significant quilts presented for 'Show and Tell". This beautiful Fairy Quilt was made by Liz with much love and tender care for her young grand daughter.

"Piecemakers" Art Union

These photos are of the 2 prizes in our Art Union being drawn on Friday 30th October 2009 at QCWA Conference at City Hall on 28th, 29th, 30th October. They will be on display at the Conference and tickets will be available. Otherwise you can obtain tickets from our treasurer, Joy Mackenzie. Phone 49392914.

Two photos of the 1st prize. These blocks were from the Port Curtis Division and pieced by the Moggill Branch and professionally quilted and is a beautiful quilt. It is valued at $900.00.

This ABC single bed quilt is the 2nd prize and is valued at $600.00. I am sure a Grandmother would love to give this quilt to a grandchild should she win it. The blocks were made by the Kingaroy Branch and put together by members from the Moggill Branch.

UpcomingWorkshop at Yeppoon 2010

These are photos of the quilts being offered by tutor, Ruth Wagner, at the workshop at Coolwaters, Kinka Beach near Yeppoon on 16th & 17th January, 2010. This is Piecemakers annual workshop held at Coolwaters each January and in the past has proved very popular with girls coming from Amby, Tambo, Atherton, several from Brisbane and many from the surrounding areas of Yeppoon and Rockhampton. Ruth is wellknown and popular tutor from Mt Perry who specialises in fabric dyeing and contemporary quilts using either all dyed fabrics or a mix of commercial and dyed fabrics. All of the quilts below are about wall hanging/lap quilt size/table toppersize.

3. Strips n curves for advanced quilters. Teaches colour selection using many fabrics, cutting and sewing curves, can also use foundation piecing incorporating arcs (as in New York Beauty, colour value understanding.

2. Strip insertion overlay for intermediate quilters. Teaches colour selection using many fabrics, handling bias edges, accurate straight sewing of blocks, can be colourwashed. It can be either 4 patch blocks before strip insertion (as in the Green Overlay) Lot longer to make as you virtually have to make the quilt twice or a single block (as in the Gerbera Overlay.

3. 9 patch using the 9 patch pizzazz technique for beginners. It teaches colour selection using 3 fabrics, basic cutting techniques, straight sewing of blocks.

The two quilts above and below were made by Christine. She has been busy with her UFO's and is having a lot of success. The quilt below is '12 days of Christmas' and the above is a stunning quilt made for her grandchildren.

A Kaffe Fassett Quilt. Personally I love Kaffe's fabrics and hope to have one finished before the end of the year. This quilt came out of 'Quilts in the Sun' book as Kaffe lovers would know. Shirley is one of our newish members and we are very proud of her. Shirley is also a new Committee Member for Piecemakers. Congratulations Shirley.

This sampler quilt was originally a class for members to learn some difficult blocks and because of various circumstances the class was never completed. Ione finished hers and this is the result - a beautiful quilt. It was too large to be able to photgraph completely. This will probably prompt some other members to finish their UFO.

Youngcare - Sinnamon Park. Brisbane

Youngcare is for young adults who need full time care and a building was designed and built at Sinnamon Park in Brisbane almost 2 years ago. It has 14 apartments and recreation facilities and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Gay (our Chairman), Bernie and myself (Committee members) arrived at Youngcare on the morning of 24 June Almost all the residents and staff were waiting in the activities area to great us. (The area was all decorated out with balloons, flags etc as it was the day of the Origin football - Maroons verses Blues at Suncorp Stadium. The Maroon supporters outnumbered the Blue supporters). We were given a warm welcome and the quilt was presented to the group. Two or three of the girls were quilters themselves and they were pleased to see some of Gay's quilts she had with her as she was conducting a workshop at Moggill the next day. We were given a tour over the building and were very impressed with what we saw including some of the patio gardens. Virginia was proud to showed us the patchwork quilt on her bed which her Mother had made for her. Her Mother use to be a CWA member out of Moree in New South Wales. We were invited to share lunch - a sausage sizzle - footie fare - which we thoroughly enjoyed. Some had wheelchair bags on their wheelchairs but they were showing wear and we promised to make 14 to be given later in the year.

PATCHWORK WORKSHOP JANUARY 2009

On Saturday, 17th January 23 ladies arrived bright and early to begin Ruth Wagner's Workshop at Coolwaters Holiday Village, Kinka Beach (just south of Yeppoon). Members came from far and wide including Amby, surrounding areas of Rockhampton and Brisbane. The Workshop titled "Introduction to Hand-dyed Fabric Contemporary Piecing" was a follow up from a previous workshop held in the same venue twelve months previously by Ruth when she taught Fabric Dyeing. Most had their hand dyed fabrics, batik collections and some commercial prints to learn about blending colours and explore new contemporary techniques of quiltmaking. Four sessions covered separate techniques - 1. Strip Piecing 2. Foundation Piecing/Curved Piecing 3. Curved Piecing/Applique 4. Improvisational Piecing. Thank you Ruth for a wonderful stimulating weekend. The above quilt was a Convergence quilt made by Ruth.

The above photos were taken at the Multiple Sclerosis Home at Dutton Park when some of our Committee members presented 120 Wheelchair Bags made by members and friends from around the state. They have up to 25 permanent residents and during each year over 90 respite persons pass through the facility. The recipients were most appreciative of the bags and their faces really lit up as they received them. Our Committee has taken the Wheelchair Bags up as an ongoing charitable project and call on all sewers to participate. If you need the pattern any QCWA member would be happy to oblige.

The workshop will be exploring using your stash of hand dyed fabrics, batik collections or commercial prints in a contemporary style creating table runners or cloths. These are good training pieces for your better quilts and you will learn about blending colours as well as learning some new techniques. The weekend will be divided into 4 sessions each covering separate techniques used in contemporary quiltmaking. (a) Strip Insertion (b) Foundation Piecing/Curved Piecing (c) Curved Piecing/Applique (d) Improvisational Piecing.

The cost of this workshop will be $60.00 total for the two days which will include the tutoring, morning and afternoon teas and lunches on both days.

There is very good accommation available at Coolwaters which I can fully recommend. $25.00 per night (no Linen) staying at the Lodge which we have booked but as beds are limited anyone interested would need to let our Treasurer, Joy Mackenzie, know early.

Wheelchair Bags for M.S.

Moggill Piecemakers had a working bee today making Wheelchair Bags for M.S. This project has been our yearly charity for 2008. Not only did Patchworkers come, several of the Moggill members who are sewers, plus some family and friends of members and a QCWA member (who often does our workshops and knows several of the girls) but lives in the Redland area all came for the day. We all spent a very productive and social day piecing and completing bags. These bags will be presented to the M.S. Society at the QCWA Conference held at the end of October in the Brisbane City Hall. I will post some photos of the bags prior to the Conference, in the meantime here are some photos from today.

Central Regional Meeting

The LHS quilt belongs to June Walters from Gympie South Burnett Branch and it is made up of hand embroidery, applique and pieced patchwork. The Stack and Whack in the glorious blue Hydrangea pattern belongs to Mary Wells and is the result of the Parkhurst Workshop taught by Gay Burey.

QCWA is divided into three Regions, Northern, Central and Southern. Recently Central Region had their meeting and here a couple of photos from their display. The Challenge Quilt for this year is "Singing the Blues" and these quilts will be hung and judged at State Conference in the Brisbane City Hall (Balmoral Suite) on 28th - 30th October 2008. Southern Regional meeting is to be held on 17th - 20th September in Warwick. Our annual charity this year is making wheelchair bags for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (this is the third year we will have presented M.S. with colourful and patchwork wheelchairs bags) These will be presented to Heather Winning of Cranston Lodge, the residential care facility of the Society, by our Chairman, Jan Ross during the State Conference.

Moggill's August News

Earlier this year we got several new Patchwork members and three of them started Lynne's Mystery Quilt. This photo of an unfinished one was taken at "Show and Tell" but had the borders on by the time the day was finished. The finished quilts will be posted later.

This unfinished "Lynne's Rose of Sharon" quilt belongs to Bernie.

This beautiful quilt is the first finished of 'Lynne's Rose of Sharon' design. It was a wonderful learning curve as all the blocks were 4" square. You will find Churn Dash, Shoo Fly, Puss in Corner, Nine Patch and a couple of foundation pieced. Everyone has enjoyed making this quilt

and there should be more finished ones next postings. This is Trish's quilt.

Aproximately 8 to 10 members of the branch have joined the Patchwork group meeting on the second Thursday of the month and have been knitting and putting together knitted squares for the Children's Cardiac Unit of the Mater Hospital. These are some examples.

This photo is most of the Moggill girls on the day we all brought a plate and gave our tutor, Lynne Smith a farewell lunch as she has resigned for C.W.A. We are very sorry to lose her from our group but as she lives in the area we will all be seeing her from time to time. All the very best Lynne.

These two photos will be some of our projects until the end of the year. It is 2nd August today and how the time has flown this year. It seems crazy starting Christmas hangings now but before we know it Christmas will be here.

Recently Christine returned from USA where she had a very interesting and exciting week attending Quilt Shows, Quilt Museums and Shopping, Shopping etc. This vintage quilt she brought back. Double Irish Chain made approx 1830's and in excellent condition. I thought we would share this with you as I personally do not see many Vintage Quilts.

This one of the last Mystery Quilts to be finished. This quilt was designed and taught by Lynne.

The Kenniff Country Quilters Annual Quilt Show was held recently and Piecemakers Chairman, Jan Ross officially opened it. This display was held in the Maranoa Library and Art Centre and Jan said she was very impressed with the various techniques the quilters used to make this show so successful. Also four quilts were included made by students from Mitchell State High School and the Challenge for the show was 'Kenniff or Country' and there are several photos above from this show including photos from Piecemakers members as some of whom belong to Kenniff Country Quilters as well as Piecemakers.

Clontarf Workshop

On 27th & 28th September, 2008 Donna Davis will be conducting a weekend workshop at QCWA Hall Clontarf. Donna, who describes herself as "Poet Extraordinaire" will be teaching the creation of wonderful "Post Cards" and all the techniques involved. Other items are covers for Binders and Notebooks and small Wallhangings. We are anticipating a unique weekend with the combination of patchwork and poetry. Mariya Water's presentation 'Life and Times with Quilts

On the Sunday night of the long weekend in June Mariya gave a power point presentation of her 'Life and Times with Quilts' followed by a display of some of her award winning quilts. This presentation was so interesting as Mariya travelled with us her life as a quilter in various places around the world. She now lives in Melbourne and still enjoys creating and making quilts for exhibitions and her family. We all felt so privileged to share this part of her life with her. Some stayed for supper after all supplied by the Moggill Branch Caterers. By the end of the 3 days everyone felt inspired and were looking forward to using these new skills. ( P.S. One member attending the workshop has already made a wallhanging using the Floriani tearaway that is water-soluable). Turned Edge Applique by Machine - Size 60cm X 70cm

Machine applique using a new modern method by turning the edges of the applique shapes over a semi soluable stabiliser. When the work is washed the stabliser virtually disappears. The stitching is a very fine zig zag stitch that if far easier than satin stitch and leaves the block with the soft turned edges similar to hand applique. The photos above are work in progress and Mariya's sample. Immediately above are 2 of Mariya's samples using the same method.

Mariya Water's Workshop on the long weekend in June

This very interesting workshop was held in the new Ruth Fairfax House and several of the country girls stayed in the wonderful facilities of CWA's very own new building. Mariya is a dedicated quilter and lives in Melbourne and has won many professional and popular awards in Australia and U.S.A. Her 'Renaissance Revival' quilt (which I understand from a current Quilt Magazine has recently won Australia's National Quilt Award (sponsored by Bernina). This quilt is currently travelling around Australia with the Craft & Quilt Fair and will be in Brisbane later in the year. I was fortunate enough to view it at the Gold Coast Craft & Quilt Fair early in the year.

On the Sunday evening Mariya gave us a power point presentation of some of her quilts together with some of her prize winning quilts for us to see, study and touch.

Decorative Thread Workshop - Finished size 45cm X 55cm

The first day was spent working on a design using decorative threads using bobbin drawing, machine couching and echo machine quilting techniques. There were 2 patterns - Dandelions and Fish. The fabric used was either hand painted or batik styled fabric. The photos are of Mariya's samples and work in progress by some of the girls participating.

Ridgeland Branch Workshop

Earlier in the year Lynne (a Piecemaker's tutor) travelled to Ridgeland to conduct a Bargello Workshop for the Ridgeland members. Ridgeland is about 28 Klms from Rockhampton and consists of a School, CWA, Community Hall and Showground. Members for the workshop came from the surrounding properties and others who are now retirees from Rockhampton and other towns.

The photos above are of some of the half finished Bargello's and the other Lynne's teaching quilt.

Country Patchwork Daytripping

The Flyer said "Bring a hat and a chair". An invitation to an outback garden day, no, nothing like it. Come to the first open day for a new patchwork shop "Cow paddocks Patchwork Crafts n Coffee". Julie Latcham, a young enthusiastic patchworker and teacher on a property near Dulacca in Southern Queensland has set up shop in a Donga beside her house, where she also teaches a variety of workshops, has a mail order service (a must for isolated patchworkers) and fabric clubs.
Eleven members from the Mitchell Kenniff Country Quilters set off early for the 3 hour drive. We didn't fill the cars up with quilts for show and tell because we would need the space for our purchases. Some of us needed a fabric fix.
Even Julie was surprised at the response expecting about 50 people. Over 100 patchworkers from the Miles, Chinchilla, Condamine, Dulacca, Wallumbilla, Taroom, Wandoan, Glenmorgan, Mitchell and Charlewille areas as well as one from Barcaldine made the journey. It was a wonderful day with demonstrations of new products, competitions, lucky draws, informative presentations by a prize winning quilter and professional machine quilter both from the Glenmorgan district, inspirational show and tell and great food supplied by the local Dulacca Kindergarten and Playgroup mothers.
Being able to swap ideas and information with other quilting groups was part of the experience as well.
There is no need to tell you that Julie's shop was greatly depleted of stock when everyone left, however, I'm sure that her very diverse range of fabrics, patterns, threads and notions would quickly be replenished.
Our long trip home was full of chatter about the great time we had and how we will definitely make the effort to go next year as this will now be an annual event. We all agreed that those fold up chairs take up a lot of room in our car boot.

The Strip Quilt was made by Bernie from a Rainbow Kit from a 'Strip Club'. All the blocks are the same and placement and colours make the design.

Chelsea Physic Garden Small Quilt

This little quilt (8.5x9.5ins) was made to commemorate a trip Lesley made to Chelsea Physic Garden in London last year. This garden was originally opened to train apprentice apothecaries to identify and grow medicinal plants.

The quilt has as its base tea bags which were first used to make tea then dried, emptied of tea leaves and carefully opened out. They were then applied to a piece of painted calico with diluted PVC.

I drew the map showing the location of the garden in London, wrote the name of the benefactor Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) in the top right hand corner and the date of the start of the garden 1673 in the bottom middle. Other stamps were applied to the surface to indicate the use of the garden which was to collect and grow medicinal plants from around the world, something it still does today. In the bottom right corner a rock garden is shown as the garden has the oldest such in Europe. There is also a stamp of a rhino as for some reason this appears on the top of the gate to the garden.

After stamping I coloured some of the images then quilted it using the map of the layout of the gardens as the template.

Chelsea Physic Garden is the second oldest of this type of garden in England and still continues to maintain its collection of rare and medicinal plants from around the world.

A happy time was had by the 21 members who attended this workshop. All managed to attend despite some having difficulty arriving because of the wonderful rain Central Queensland recieved. The workshop with Ruth was a delighful experience, where we were all able to drown ourselves in colour with the results being spectacular. We were encouraged to venture into the unknown with wonderful threads and techniques of quildig on our dyed fabrics. The weekend was full of fun and friendship and here are some of the results.

YEPPOON WORKSHOP

Several members from Brisbane and from around the State will travel to Yeppoon to do a workshop with tutor, Ruth Wagner, on 19th & 20th January, 2008 on Fabric Dyeing and Quilting Hand Dyed Fabrics Workshop. The workshop has already been posted with 2 photos and next week there will be photos of the results of the weekend.

CLONTARF WORKSHOP

QCWA Conference - Maryborough

For 3 or 4 years Piecemakers have been offering a Bursery to a student at Moreton Institute of TAFE, Mt Gravatt Campus studying for a Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear. Congratulations Hayleigh Bartels of Goondiwindi the winner for 2007.

"Party Time" Challenge - Congratulations Jean from Silkwood Branch who won the Viewers Choice with her beautiful wallhanging of Four Dragons. The second wallhanging is another entrant - Cocktail Hour.

Congratulations also go to Lorraine from Gympie Branch for winning the Viewers Choice 'Do Not Touch ' signs. Sorry no Photo.

I have been away and had the most wonderful holiday sailing up the Yangtze for 8 days from Shanghai, viewing the Terracotta Warriors, time in Laos which was magic then time with family in Phnom Penh when the annual 'Water Festival' was on and lots lots more.

These 2 small quilts are samples of raw edge applique that demonstrate the technique. This workshop should give people the skills to dye fabric, use it in their creations, and how to use quilting as a further design element.

Parkhurst Patchwork Group "block drawer"

This photo is some of the 14 ladies from Parkhurst showing the set of blocks that they won in the "block drawer". Each fortnight they made 2 of a different block all using the same seeded homespun with other fabrics of their own choice. It was good for all to participate to learn the techniques as well as colour combinations. After they finished the 14th block, they do a draw. Then they hand in these 28 blocks. Everyone enjoyed making so many different blocks all the same but with different colours. Photos of completed quilts to follow later.

Parkhurst Branch Workshop

The Emu Park CWA Hall was a hive of activity when the Parkhurst Branch hosted a patchwork workshop led by Lynne and an enthusiastic band of patchworkers who enjoyed learning the techniques of fabric stencilling, Japanese sashiko and crazy patch. Members of several branches attended and enjoyed Lynne's patient relaxed presentation. Not only did the ladies learn techniques, they heard interesting background and historical explanations which put the project into perspective.

At the end of the weekend everyone had the knowledge and ability to complete their work at home. The hospitality of Parkhurst was much appreciated with their sumptuous morning and afternoon teas plus tasty lunches. The weekend was a great success. Congratulations Joy, for winning the Viewer's Choice at Emu Park Quilt Show

This Polygon Flower Garden Wallhanging was made by Joy, from Yeppoon who won the Viewer's Choice at the Emu Park Quilt Show. The two types of fabric folded flowers used in this pictorial hanging are pentagon and octagon. The tall angular background greenery being foundation piecing, finishing with bias stems and appliqued leaves.

Congratulations, Lynne for winning Viewer's Choice at Dalby Quilt Show

The Southern Regional Quilt Show at Dalby was very successful, with Lynne from Brisbane winning the Viewer's Choice with the above beautiful Bargello Quilt. The Ridgeland Ladies have already booked Lynne to teach their group the Bargello technique in April 2008.

Silkwood Piecemakers

Silkwood Piecemakers are extremely pleased with their recent Quilt Raffle for Angel Flight, making $1,040.00 for this most necessary service. They are also grateful for the photocopier given them after the cyclone and they have also bought rolls of wadding. Both of these things have made a considerable saving for these busy ladies. Currently they are hand piecing hexagons to make into a bag. They say, 'they talk at lot, stitch a lot and achieve a lot'. Congratulations to you all.

Welcome and introduction to our Branches

Hello and welcome to our first blog. I thought it would be useful to introduce you to some of our Piecemakers branches.

Brisbane has two groups –
CITY PIECEMAKERS meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in a meeting room of the new City Library. Recently they had a bag workshops but mainly members hand sew their current projects.

MOGGILL PIECEMAKERS meet at Bellbowrie the 2nd Thursday each month. Moggill is made up of 15 members and they are currently finishing off a Mystery Quilt designed and taught by Lynne. We will post photos as soon as possible.

Capricornia Division has been extremely busy –
PARKHURST PIECEMAKERS have been kept busy preparing traditional blocks. Each fortnight they make two of the chosen blocks and then pool the 28 blocks. When they have finished making the 14 different blocks, they have a block draw and each one will win one of the groups of 28 blocks. They expect to be finished about the end of September. Photos will follow.

RIDGELANDS BRANCH has a group who meet each Tuesday. A workshop has been organised for May 2008. Lynne will teach Bargello.

EMU PARK PIECEMAKERS meet each Tuesday and have just held their biannual Quilt Show on Saturday, 18 August. Photos are coming.

AMBROSE BRANCH hosted a Kaleidoscope Pinwheels (Stack and Whack) workshop on 5/6 May taught by Gay.

WESTERN AREAS. Charleville Group CWA Warrego Piecemakers meet next on 6th September. Roma hosted a “Lone Star” workshop with Gay on 24 August.
